Ruins of Siem Reap

The city of Siem Reap in Cambodia is said to have gotten its name from a centuries-old battle between the Siamese and Khmer kingdoms. Though the exact origin of the name is a mystery, the name Siem Reap means “Defeat of Siem.”

This second-largest city in Cambodia is also the gateway to the Angkor Wat temples. The ruins of the Angkor Wat temples are of course a must-visit for everyone traveling to Cambodia. But the city has more to offer. If you have had your fill of exploring the temple grounds, you should take the time to visit the Apsaras dance and dinner show which is one of the other major attractions. Follow this by a visit to Cambodia cultural village, Kbal Spean River, Chau Say Tevoda and a trip to the Phnom Kulen National Park.

Royalty in Phnom Penh

Cambodia’s capital city houses a Royal Palace with golden spires that is a must-visit for all those traveling here for the first time. You can learn about Khmer artefacts and history at the National Museum and even pick up a souvenir for yourself from Phsar Reatrey. The charm of the city lies in its locations at the conjunction of three rivers – Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac. In between the pagodas, one can also find French colonial houses that are worth a tour.

Ko Rong, the Island Paradise

For leisure travelers, the island of Ko Rong is the place to be. Featuring some of the most beautiful beaches, Ko Rong remains a favorite place among tourists. The island also offers a number of exciting water sports like snorkeling, diving and kayaking. You can also visit the rope adventure park for a great zip lining experience and explore the butterfly farm and mini zoo on Police beach.

Donned with tropical hardwood forests, the Preah Vihear province attracts visitors who want to experience the lush countryside. One of the main attractions here is the Prasat Preah Vihear complex located at the top of a cliff in the Dangrek mountains. This temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and boasts marvelous stone ornamentation and architecture. The Nagaraja Courtyard in the temple has snakeheads and tails carved all around it. 

Floating Village in Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap is a freshwater lake in northwest Cambodia. It has beautiful floating villages that are home to migratory birds, a variety of fish species, crocodiles and also macaques. At the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, you will be able to spot black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Spot-billed Pelican and more. Also, the villages of Kompong Phluk and Kompong Kleang are beautiful examples of Cambodian village life.

Quiet life at Kep

The Kep National Park is home to beautiful waterfalls and as you walk, you will also meet many monkeys. You can also find the pre-war French villas here. Kep Beach is also a great place to be with its white sandy shores and gorgeous sunsets. A variety of crab menus that you can find at the Crab Market. Kep is generally quiet and can be a great place to visit if you are looking for an escape from the more touristy spots.

Casinos in Poipet

If you want to bet on your luck, Poipet is the place to be. Casinos and karaoke bars here are filled with locals and tourists alike. Some of the popular casinos are the Grand Diamond City and Tropicana casino resorts. Besides the casinos, you can also taste Khmer Coffee at the local places in Poipet and enjoy the beer gardens. Being at the border of Cambodia and Thailand, the Kingdom Gate is another architectural splendour worth a visit.

Lush Green Battambang

Cambodia’s rich history and culture can be experienced in Battambang. With lush green rice paddy fields lined by lakes and streams, makes it a beautiful destination. You can learn about rice wine cultivation, traditional weaving and all about Cambodian village life from the locals here. Battambang is also home to Cambodia’s best circus known as “Phare Ponleu Selpak.” Complete your trip by taking a boat ride from Battambang to Siem Reap.
