Hostels

Hostels are a great option for budget travellers. Many hostels provide even more services than hotels, and they are really clean because young people expect more comfort. They have Wi-Fi, a tour desk, a bar, curtains, a locker, etc. Hostels are safe and cheap, so even if you are not a young tourist, don’t ignore them.

Home exchanges

This may be best for elderly travellers who already own a house. For a while, you trade a house with a family from another country. This is a great way to live cheaply abroad. Sites that make home exchanges easier often have multiple levels of verification and security, just like couch surfing. Family members communicate with each other via telephone and e-mail. You can enjoy the comforts of home (hot water, laundry, etc.)) and travel to another city without paying costly hotel rates.

Airbnb

Similar to apartment exchange, Airbnbs allow you to live in a furnished apartment while travelling. These apartments are cheaper than hotels and have more convenient facilities. They are great if you plan to stay in one place for a week or more. These apartments are a good bridge between the hotel and the hostel, but they can be a bit expensive for solo travellers. But if you are part of a group or couple and want to rest in a hotel and group of travellers, but don’t want to stay in a hotel room, then this is the best choice for you.

Living in an RV or Car

Many travellers who do road trips prefer to stay in their own car or RVs to save cost of accommodation. If you do not own a car, you can always renting an RV or a camper van. This is a much less expensive and secure lodging alternative. You would need to have a mattress and cooking equipments to cut down on your costs further and travel stress free.

Camping

One of the other best ways to save money is to bring your own camp tents and set it up. This will save you a lot more money than staying at fancy places especially remote locations which can cost a lot.

The residences in these monasteries are often very simple, with only one bed and one table, and simple dishes prepared by monks and nuns. Most of them also have a curfew. Many monasteries offer room either for donations or or free of charge, which makes them a good budget option.
