Ladakh located at an altitude of 8370 feet above sea level is known as the “Land of High Pass”. Surrounded by the rugged Himalayan ranges, white snowy peaks, and green valleys, Ladakh is a land of tranquillity. Being on a high altitude, it experiences long winters and therefore the best time to visit is during the summer months. From trekking up the popular tourist trails to resting at mountain camps at night and watching starry skies.

Here are the top destinations in Ladakh that you should not miss visiting in 2021:
Pangong Tso Lake

The Pangong Tso Lake is a lake situated at an altitude of 14,250 feet above sea level. It is a saltwater lake that is also famous for its blue-colored water. The reflection of light from the mountains changes the color of the water three to four times a day from dawn to dusk. During the winter months, the lake freezes making it possible for one to walk on its frozen surface. Due to the saline nature of the lake, there is not much aquatic life present but the area is visited by migratory birds who breed around the lake. If you have Ladakh on your mind, Pangong Lake should be on top of your list.

Khardung-la Pass

Hairpin bends, rough roads, and a drive through the highest motorable road in the world, the Nubra road will take you to the Khardung-La pass. The pass has been named after the Khardung village. Khardung-la also the gateway to the Nubra valley and the Siachen glacier. One needs a permit to visit here and the Indian army also holds a post here.

Nubra Valley

Nubra valley was once known as Ladorma meaning “valley of flowers”. It appears like an oasis with sand dunes, green patches, double-humped camels, and being warmer than Leh. You can stay in tents and also the many hotels, homestays, and guesthouses. You can visit the monasteries like the Diskit monastery and the Samstanling monastery when you are here. The valley also has a number of rivers and lakes that make it worth a visit.

Tso Moriri Lake

A breathtaking blue lake located at almost 4000 metres above sea level, Tso Moriri is serene and secluded. It is home to a number of wildlife and migratory birds. It is also known as the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve and human activity in the area is largely restricted. Being at a higher altitude, the area also has thin areas which make it difficult for people not acclimatized to higher altitudes to face difficulty in breathing. The best time to visit it is during the summer season.

Shanti Stupa

The Shanti Stupa is one of the seven Buddhist Shanti Stupas that are present all over the world. It has a beautiful white dome structure and is a calm and serene place. Along with a different architectural grandeur that is different from other buildings in the region of Leh Ladakh. It has a life-size statue of Gautam Buddhist on the first level and the second level has depictions of his life. The view from the stupa is spectacular with white mountains as the scenery.

Royal Leh Palace

The Royal Leh Palace or the Lhachen Palkhar is situated at the top of Tsemo Hill. It has nine storeys and offers a splendid view of the surrounding town. It is also a Buddhist centre and also houses a monastery that has a Lord Buddha statue. There are many old paintings, royal artefacts inside the Palace Halls. The palace is now officially maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Magnetic Hill

About 30 kilometers from the city of Leh lies the very unique Magnetic Hill known for its defiance of gravity. The force of gravity is so strong in this area that stationary vehicles can roll up the hill at the speed of 20km/hour. The area around the hill is mostly barren with a few homestays. The hill is flanked by the Sindhu river on its eastern part and is a must-visit to experience this phenomenon of nature.

Alchi Monastery

A 900-year-old monastery, the Alchi Monastery throws light on a long-lost story of the people who were once here. The walls of the temples are covered with hundreds of seated Buddhas. The monastery also has a majestic figure of Bodhisattva Maitreya. There are other massive figures wearing dhoti that are embellished with scenes from Buddha’s life. The figurines at Alchi monastery are some of the best works of Buddhist art from this era.

Zanskar Valley

Nestled in a semi-arid region of the Himalayas, Zanskar Valley is at 13,154 feet above sea level. The azure blue lakes, lush landscape, and snow-capped mountains are the highlights of this area. There are also a number of adventures that you can do here like paragliding, river rafting, and trekking to name a few. The best time to visit is during the summer months as the area tends to be blocked due to heavy snowfall during the winter months.

Lamayuru

Famous for a craggy terrain and known for its topography like the moon, Lamayuru is a must-visit destination. It is a small hamlet that is also home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh known as the Lamayuru. The monastery has beautiful Buddhist paintings, murals, and wall frescoes. The landscape of Lamayuru is stunning and anyone traveling will have a treat for their eyes.
